Dear Classmates

To my classmates,
Thank you for helping me when I'm struggling or need help. Whenever I have a question, you are usually more than happy to help. It's been a good year with you guys, and I hope to see some of you in my English class next year. I would say our English class was very fun and entertaining. Thank you for helping me to learn and to grow as a person. You guys welcomed me into the school knowing I was new.

There are a few things that I have learned this year. Most important: do not procrastinate. This class is a bit challenging, and the papers are going to take more than one night to write. I have learned from personal experience. I've also learned it's very important to take notes in class, and to thoroughly analyze and annotate the books we read in class.

You guys have taught me so much this year. Good luck with sophomore year! Good luck on exams!

Evalutation of the Fourth Quarter

I think for this quarter, I have done well in general procedures. I usually come to class prepared with the materials I need. I wait for the bell to dismiss me, and I use the time between classes wisely. I have been good about checking my email and the website daily. I turn in my assignments, and try to participate in class.

In class, I try to take as many notes as possible and to pay attention. I don't usually talk, but when I do my comments are relevant to the discussion we are having. I don't usually have side conversations with anyone in class.

I stay focused and try not to distract the people around me, so that they may get their work done. I try to do more than what is expected in order to improve myself in that class. This year in English, I have participated more and paid more attention in class because I find that if I do, it helps me to get better grade and a better understanding of English.

Outside Reading

This year, I think as a reader, I challenged myself to read books that I probably wouldn't have read before. Such as the book I'm reading now which is The Lightning Thief. The books that I am most interested in are realistic fiction.

I always have thought of myself as a good reader. I am able to read a large amount of pages in a short amount of time, and comprehend what is going on and what will probably happen. Although, this year, I didn't read as many books as I wanted to.

When we were talking about literary elements, and things like "Reading Like a Reader", I had connected it to how I read. It made me think about how I should analyze a story the next time I read one. It made me think deeper about my reading.

In the future, by next year, I want to read at least 7 books. That is one of my reading goals I will set for myself.

Book: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Macbeth's Perspective

In our class, we have been reading Macbeth. From what we have been reading so far, Macbeth is trying to rush the fate of him becoming king. What the witches said has gotten to his head. Not only by him, but by Lady Macbeth as well. So far, it seems like Macbeth is on his way to becoming king.

From Macbeth's perspective, he does want to be king, but he's willing to be patient. He murder's Duncan from the pressure of Lady Macbeth. I feel like he wants to make her happy, and feels if he was king, he would accomplish that. He knows he feels bad about the murder, but has to act like nothing happens, just as any other normal person would do in that situation.

Writing Wrap Up

Since the beginning of the year, I think my ideas in my writing have improved for the most part. Not only that, but my word choice and sentence structure has as well. With my word choice, I’m not repeating the same words, and I’m using more descriptive words in my writing. My ideas in my paper have improved. They have progressively become more developed with each paper I write.
At the same time, my ideas could use improvement by intertwining my ideas in my papers instead of stating it at the end of the essay.  I could work on improving my organization and support. My papers seem to have some of the information out of order, making it confusing to read, with little support along with it.
The feedback was mostly accurate for what I knew about my writing. I knew my papers hadn’t always strived when it came to organization. It seems when I want to add something, I don’t know exactly where to put it, and end up putting it where it makes the essay confusing. The feedback that I didn’t think was very accurate was about conventions. I had always thought that was what was strongest in my papers.
In the literacy narrative essay, I thought the conventions would be the strongest, when it turns out it was one of the weakest, along with my organization. Dr. D commented, “This paper does not show a lot of attention to organization.” Looking back at my paper, I realize all the mistakes and how she was right. It made me think about improvements I needed to make in future papers.
My poor organization skills had also seemed to come up in my Profile paper. In this paper, my ideas weren’t so strong.  She told me, “You went from not having meaning to having hidden meaning that is revealed at the end.” After this, my ideas had started to improve, but she pointed out that I needed to work on it a little bit.
In my literary analysis, I noticed my organization still hadn’t changed, which did frustrate me for quite some time. My word choice had not improved here either. In this paper, I also got the tense of the paper wrong. I wrote it in past tense, instead of literary present tense. My voice in the paper had been very informal. I wasn’t supposed to use contractions, but did anyway.
In my Global Issues Paper. My organization skills had improved very little. But it’s a step up. The order and transitions was stronger than my source integration. Like Dr. D said, “Work particularly on integrating sources.”

Common Errors list:
1.     Pronoun/antecedent agreement
o   Ex: As she was passing them out, she would say our name.
A pronoun and an antecedent must match in number. Instead of “name” it should say “names.”
2.     Improper semicolon use
o   Ex: I had already done the flip; it was too late.
Instead of the colon, I could’ve used a comma.
3.     Improper tense
o   In my literary analysis, the whole paper is in the wrong tense.
4.     Informal language
o   Ex: It’s the reason everything in the story happened.
Instead of using “it’s” use the more formal “it is”
5.     Weak paragraph transitions
o   Ex: In an empty lot, it’s easy to spot an object just laying there, especially a gun.
After a paragraph, it should have a stronger to introduce a new paragraph.

Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging

This week, I decided to jump back into Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. I like some of the ideas in this book. It shows how all people are insecure at some point in their life, and that you're not the only one who feels that way. It also shows how there is always someone out there who will like you for you. It shows how everyone is created differently, and that's what makes us come together.

In this book, I've also noticed some of the language used. Since it is told from a teenage girls point of view, there is going to be a lot of slang. A lot of this is british slang; it's a good thing there is a dictionary in the back for these terms, or I'd be totally lost. For example, I would have never guessed that "nappy" meant a diaper.

"All This and Heaven Too" by Florence + the Machine

In this song, there are a lot of poetic techniques used. For example, the first line she says,
"And the heart is hard to translate,
it has a language of its own,
it talks and tongues and quiet sighs and prayers and proclamations,
in the grand days of great men and the smallest of gestures,
in short shallow gasps."
In these lines, she personifies her heart as if it were its own person with a personality. She also uses a lot of consonance in the same line. She uses the t, pr, and g sound. It puts emphasis on what she is saying, and makes you pay attention to sound. She is using symbolism here. She is saying that the heart is hard to understand, and that we don't always know what it wants, so it's hard to understand what love is at times.

In the chorus, there is more consonance. For example,
"But with all my education,
I can't seem to commend it,
and the words are all escaping me,
and coming back all damaged."
In these lines, she constantly repeats the c sound, giving it a certain sound and repeated rhythm. She also personifies the words, like they are actually leaving her body, and becoming damaged. This gives the poem a bit more personality, and more symbolism. She is symbolizing how she doesn't really understand how love works when she writes it down, and how it can't be taught, it just comes naturally. How it is a strong feeling that would make her want to give all the heavens just for the one she loves.

One of the most common patterns used in this song was consonance throughout the whole song. There were consonance in almost every line of the song.

13 Reasons Why

This week, I read Thirteen Reasons Why. In this book, a girl named Hannah has committed suicide. Before she dies, she makes cassette tapes for 13 different people to tell them why they are the reason she died. The story is told from Clay's point of view, who is one of the people who receives the tapes.

After reading this book, I will admit, I actually got a little depressed. I will warn you this book is very sad since it is about suicide. It also makes me think how life is precious, and how sometimes people don't realize when they're actually hurting someone. It relates to me because there have been times where I have been made fun of, and so has everybody else.

"Fifth Grade Autobiography" by Rita Dove

"Fifth Grade Autobiography" by Rita Dove

I was four in this photograph fishing
with my grandparents at a lake in Michigan.
My brother squats in poison ivy.
His davy Crockett cap
sits squared on his head so the raccoon tail                    5
flounces down the back of his sailor suit.

My grandfather sits to the far right
in a folding chair,
and I know his left hand is on
the tobacco in his pants pocket                                     10
because I used to wrap it for him
every Christmas. Grandmother's hips
bulge from the brush, she's leaning
into the ice chest, sun through the trees
printing her dress with soft                                           15
luminous paws.

I am staring jealously at my brother;
the day before he rode his first horse, alone.
I was strapped in a basket
behind my grandfather.                                                20
He smelled of lemons. He's died-

but I remember his hands.

This week, I analyzed the poem called "Fifth Grade Autobiography" by Rita Dove. I chose this poem because to me, it seemed like the author would talk about their childhood and the great memories in it. I also thought that it would have reminded her of an actual fifth grade biography. It also reminded me of the many memoirs we had to do in middle school of some good or bad memories.
In this poem, the author likes to use enjambents in her poem. In almost every other line, there is a break between sentences. I think the author does this for emphasis on the sentence. It helps the author have a certain rhythm to the poem. It breaks it up to show the different scenes of the poem. This shows how she thinks of her memories of her family.
Something I noticed is that she talks a lot about her family in this poem. She talks about her brother, her grandmother, and her grandfather. It seems that she never talks about her parents though. She talks about her greatest memories with her family as the simplest ones. I also noticed that she liked to talk about clothing and textures a lot. Whenever she describes her family, she always describes them with some sort of object.
The author also talks a lot about body parts. She talks about the hat sitting on top of her brother's head, her grandmother's hips bulging, and her grandfather's hands. She seems to personify the parts of their body as though they were not attached to the body.

Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging

I'm reading the same book as last week. For those of you who didn't see my blog last week, you might think the book is very inappropriate, but I promise it's not. The title is a bit misleading, and so are most of the titles in the series. The books are good though. They talk about the life of a teenage girl named Georgia. She struggles with what most teenagers struggle with, insecurities, boys, and school.

On the part I stopped at, Georgia has just met a boy that she considers to be the most handsome boy she has ever seen. She immediately becomes smitten. It's almost like love at first sight. I think this book definitely is realistic to teenage girls nowadays. It is relatable, and can help girls when they feel like they are in a slump. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Nervous Conditions Project

Today, me and my group presented our Nervous Conditions project. Our project focused on examples of double meanings in the text. Most of which I noticed had come from Nyasha. Most of the time, it is about her not wanting to eat in order to stay skinny.

Overall, I think our project was pretty good. We made our points clear, so people weren't confused on what we were talking about. I think our presentation was well planned and executed. Overall, I think we all did good. I felt very proud of my project and hope to get an A on it.

Spring Break

I know how I said I was ready for summer, but spring break is definitely coming sooner. I cannot wait! I think I'll be going on vacation with my mom, and my new stepdad to this cool place called WaterColor. Not sure if I'm going, but I know it's this really cool spa place, and it's just what I need. School is really starting to stress me out, and I'm pretty sure at this point, everyone wants a break right now.

For the most part, I'm ready to be on the beach, and getting ready to tan. That's probably one of my favorite parts of vacation. It's almost like a momentum. But I'm also excited because I think I get to visit my other relatives who I don't see very much. It's always good to keep your family close because they are always there for you.

Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging

I know what you think. From the title of my book, it may seem a little inappropriate. I promise it's not. Or it doesn't seem to be so far. The book is called Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. It's the first in a series of books that are the confessions of Georgia Nicolson. In this book, Georgia faces the normal troubles of a teenager: feeling insecure, questioning why she's still single, and dealing with everyday teen problems. In the beginning of the book, it's weird, but she shaves off her eyebrows, and refuses to leave her house.

I can definitely relate to this book. Part of being a teenage girl is stressing over guys. For the most part, there is definitely a lot of insecurity involved. I like how the book deals with this in a humorous way though. It teaches us that sometimes we need to stop, and laugh at the moments in life, because everyone has those embarrassing moments.

My Mom's Wedding

This weekend, is my mom is getting married. I'm excited because I get to see my family members come in town. My sister came in last week, and I haven't seen her in two years. She's been halfway across the world so she was surprised to see how much I had grown up. My grandmother will also be coming into town on Wednesday night.

I'm a little scared about having a new stepdad. I don't know how my life will change with him living with us, and his 6 kids. I don't think they'll be living with us most of the time, but it's still going to be hard to manage all of us together. I'm hoping for the best though and trying to stay optimistic!

Deadly Cool

This week, I started to read this book called Deadly Cool. It's about a girl who's boyfriend has been cheating on her and she found out. He's been the #1 suspect of a murder, and she has to find a way to help him, despite what went on between them. I haven't gotten very far in the book, but so far I think it's good.

This book is one of the books that I can't really relate my life too, because my life is definitely not filled with that kind of crime and mystery. I really like mystery books though. They keep you reading because you want to know what happens next. I hope to finish this book by the end of the week.

Summer

I know it seems too soon to be thinking about this, but I've been thinking a lot about summer. It's the time when you get a break from everything. You don't have to stress, or worry about school, and the most important part is to just have fun, because that's what everyone else is doing. But my favorite part has to be the clothes. Everything on pinterest has me wanting to go shopping for summer clothes, and to drive to the beach as fast as possible.

The only bad thing is that here in Louisiana, the summers are always hot and humid. It's not very enjoyable, and find myself feeling gross every second I'm outside. You could spend 5 minutes outside, and just randomly start sweating. It's a gross thought to think about. But that's also what I like about summer, because a dip in the pool is much more enjoyable.

Girls Acting Catty

This week, I decided read the first book in the Gallagher series. The book is called I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have To Kill You. The book is about a girl named Cammie who goes to a spy school called the Gallagher Academy. It's an all girls school, so she hasn't had a boyfriend before. She meets a boy, and has to fake her identity so that he doesn't find out that she goes to this school.

I don't think I can really relate to this book. My life has never really been this interesting. I think it would be cool to go to a spy school though. It seems like there's so many adventures that would come your way. But I can definitely relate with her boy problems. Sometimes girls feel like they have to be someone else in order to impress a guy. Her situation is a little different though. She has to do it in order to protect her school, and to make sure that no one finds out about it.

Speak

Over break, I read a book called Speak. The book is a little disturbing, but is a little eye opening. Melinda was at a party entering her freshman year, where something happened that caused her to call the cops on the party. After that, most people in the school hate her, and she's known for calling the cops on that party. The sad part is that people don't know what really happened at the party. (You'll have to read the book to find out.)

To me, this story made me think: You can't really judge people for what they did, maybe they had a reason. Some people are just a little too quiet to speak up and say the truth. It shows how people get labeled for something that are not in their control. We can't always judge a book by it's cover, because you never really know what's actually been going on in their lives.

Mardi Gras Break

During my Mardi Gras Break, I didn't really get to do anything. I was relieved to be able to get away from school, but at the same time bored because most of my friends were out of town. The only exciting thing I really did was get a double piercing, and might now have to take it out because of softball.

A good way to kick of the break was the soccer game that was on Friday night. Knights did great. Won 3-0, and more importantly, we beat U-High. Even though they got runner-up in state, I think the soccer team is pretty amazing. They had a wonderful season, and did their very best.

Nervous Conditions Chapter 3

So far, I think the book Nervous Conditions is a little confusing. I enjoy the book, but it's hard to tell what's going on when she skips back and forth between time periods. But for most of the book, she has been talking about how much she dislikes her brother, and parents.

I think later on in the book, she might try to get away from her family, and that's probably why the author used three chapters to tell it; to foreshadow some of the events to explain them better. Right now, the whole plot is still a little confusing. I'm not too entirely sure what the book is about, but I know I'll soon find out.

Basketball Game

So as everyone knows, the basketball game against U-High was on Friday night. I thought that all the games were great. But my favorite had to be the girls Varsity game. It was one of the most amazing endings to a game I've ever seen in my life.

We were down by one point - it was 41-42, and most people had lost hope, with only 3 seconds left on the clock. We were on offense, and one of the girls had thrown the ball to the other side of the court, and another had scored. It was one of the most amazing wins I've ever seen. I think this is something I will always remember.

Nervous Conditions

First going into this reading unit, I thought I would dread reading this book. Usually I don't enjoy reading books for school. I like it better when we have the option of free choice read, that way it can be something we like. Usually, teachers like to pick the boring books, and it's not as enjoyable when you have to take notes on it.

Once I started reading the book however, I found myself surprised on how much I actually enjoyed it. I can't really relate well to this book though. I can't imagine the poverty people in Africa had to go through during that time. I can definitely relate to the family problems, as can most people who have trouble getting along with a sibling, or another family member.

Research Paper - Part 2

This time, working on my research paper, I was having a lot of faith in my draft. I think I did a good job on it. I stayed up, and did my very best working on this paper. In preparation for it, I got 19 notecards done, just so I knew I had a good amount of research.

For the paper, during the beginning, I was so worried that I wouldn't have enough research to even make 2 pages. To my surprise, Once I was done with the first page of research, I already knew I would have enough. Turns out my paper is 4 1/2 pages long. Going through this process helped me have more faith in my abilities to write.

Global Issues Analysis Paper

I've been working super hard on my paper. I did a lot of research to prepare myself for this paper, and I can't wait to finish it so I can see the final result. I'm hoping I can get an A on it. We've been working on the research since December, and we're finally getting to the paper. My topic is about the care of the disabled in Mexico. I have a lot of good arguments to support my thesis.

In class, I worked on it non-stop when we were in the library. So far, I have a detailed outline. I was a little behind at first, but now I'm starting to catch up. I definitely know I can get it done by Friday. I have no doubts about that. But I'm just worried whether or not I have enough research. So far, I'm doing pretty good with research.

Dance Moms

Recently the newest season of "Dance Moms" has come on. It's the second season in the series about young girls who dance, and the drama that goes on backstage. It doesn't just focus on the mom, but also focuses on the girls too. This dance team is full of talented young girls who travel all around the country. i don't get how, because I don't really know any parent that would spend so much on dance.

Honestly though, I love this show. I love watching the girls dance because they are extremely talented for such a young age. They usually place first whenever they go to competitions, and it doesn't surprise me because they are amazing! But what surprises me the most is that the moms cause more drama than the girls. They're always getting into fights about who's daughter is better, and the show itself is just entertaining.

Pretty Little Liars- 2

This week, I read the same book Pretty Little Liars. So far I don't want to put it down. I think I might actually read it this weekend as a stress relief. I have heard a lot about the book and series. The book is about a group of girls who get separated once their best friend is found dead. There is one mystery bringing  them together. "A" keeps using their past secrets against them, and they have to find out who is the person doing it.

I've always wondered if secrets really do keep friend super close. They're the ones that you trust them with. When a friendship ends, you're scared that person might reveal all of them. This book made me realize how close friendships can be tested. Through thick and thin, friends are always there. I know I sound super corny, but it's definitely true.

Softball

Now that I'm at EHS, I decided I would do softball. As most people know at the school, my dad is the coach of high school baseball. Most people kind of expected me to play softball automatically. My family lives, breathes, and eats baseball. It's basically in my blood.

There was one thing that scared me the most about softball though; I had never played. I was so worried I would be one of the worst players on the team, and make a fool out of myself. I know I had watched more baseball games than anyone in their life would want to, but it still made me nervous. I wasn't exactly "properly trained", but with the help of my dad, I was a little bit more prepared to go to practice.

So far, I've been doing pretty good. I'm not the best on the team, but I'm not the worst. I don't think I'm that amazing, but I'm picking it up pretty quick. I noticed one of my strong points is bunting. Hopefully, I'll be able to be one of the best players on the team, but I know that won't be for awhile.

Pretty Little Liars

The book I read is called Pretty Little Liars. I know I'm a little late since everyone has read the books, and seen the TV series, but I finally decided to read it. The plot of the story is really interesting and original.

While reading this, I didn't want to put it down. Even in the beginning, I found the plot interesting. The book is about a group of five girls, who are all bound together by secrets. They all adore one girl in particular, Alison. Most girls would do anything to be like her. While at one of the girl's houses, named Spencer, they were all playing a game when Alison left. After that, they couldn't find her for years, and their friendship with one another ended. But they soon became reunited because of those secrets, and the mystery of who killed Alison.

Snowball

This weekend I went to a cotillion dance called Snowball with my friend Billie. There are two types of cotillions: Elan and Baton Rouge. I went to both of the winter dances which were Hollyball and Snowball. I'm in neither of them, but people can bring guests, and I was invited to both of the dances.

The dances weren't really that fun. At Hollyball, I thought the dance was okay, but it wasn't that much fun. At Snowball, it was really boring though. No one really danced, and we weren't allowed to take our shoes off or we'd get in trouble by a chaperone. I was wearing strappy high heels, and they were cutting into my feet the entire night. I guess I learned my lesson; never wear heals to an Elan dance. Next time I think I'm gonna stick with flats.

One good thing that came out of both dances though was that I got to see my old friends from school. I realized how much I missed them, and didn't really talk to them anymore. Another good thing was that at both dances they give you party favors. I got a pair of black sweatpants from Hollyball, and a red sweatshirt from Snowball.

New Year's Resolutions

This New Year, I made a few resolutions. The first thing I told myself I would do this year is get all A's on my report card. I want to do better this semester to have a shot to get into a good college. My dad has been encouraging me to do better and not settle for B's, so I decided it's time to do better. I want to get more organized, that way I can get all my work done and still have some free time. I want to work on my problems with procrastination, because I'll end up getting better grades.

I also want to take advantage of extra credit opportunities. If I do, I have a better shot at getting the grades I want.  I've decided that I should study more for tests, because tests are a big percentage of my grades. I usually don't study well for most tests, and I'm going to need to improve on my study skills for when it's extremely important in college. I wanna study at least 3 days in advance for a test, and to look over the material at night so I have a better concept of what we're learning.
